about

Jazz...the word is joyous yet devisive.

On this album I have tried to deal with the idea of Jazz, considering the three factors that constitute Jazz; Improvisation, Groove and Individuality

This album explores all sorts of ways of improvising, from playing through changes, playing free, modality, time no changes and sonic experimentation.

Some of is funky, sometimes not. Sometimes it swings, sometimes not. Most of these tunes have been recorded without a click, in other words off the grid. I have let my drumming speed up and down in places, and where the playing was not on the grid, I could not use my digital audio workstation to fix mistakes, or loop, slice or cut.

I have however used digital audio techniques to try and transform sounds. My guitar is triggering keyboard sounds, my drums controlling the rhythmic aspects of the bass, keyboard and guitar and the instruments in places have been extremely processed.

I have also recorded my drums with lots of mics, and sometimes just one mic. My drums are creating drones and pedals and I have used three different drum kits on this album, and those kits have often been prepared in different ways so that kit sound itself has been transformed.

In other words, I have tried my best, within the limits of my musical abilities, to try and use the fundamental tradition of Jazz to push the music to a place which is at least for me, somewhere unexpected.

This music is sloppy, badly recorded, incoherent but I hope honest and expressive.

Is this Jazz? I don't know....I hope it is!

Some of this music is pretty abstract so I have decided to offer this album as 'Pay What You want'.

You are welcome to grab a copy of this album for free, but any funds raised will go to creating a physical release, something I would love to do with my music.

I wear my influences on my sleeve on this album. A big thank you to all my musical heroes, but especially Josef Zawinul, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, Jan Hammer, Bill Laswell, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman.

And a big thank you to Calvin Weston and Scott Henderson, whose musical wisdom directly inspired the conception and realisation of this music.
