lyrics

I
The sun had nine children. But of all her children there was one that was her favourite, and she named it Earth. So favoured was this child that she sent The Moon to watch over her. Now she had sent many to be companions of her other children but The Moon was like no other she had sent.
She positioned The Moon in such a way that his face would always look down upon Earth, and in this way The Moon could watch over her favourite. And at night this face would reflect the light of The Sun back down upon the Earth. For an immeasurable length of time the Moon watched the Earth. It was an inhospitable and violent place. The Sun’s power and might raged across her realm, and in the domain she created, her rage could engulf and destroy her children. And in this rage she sent lesser worlds that would strike and ricochet across her domain. And it was in this way the Moon became companion to Earth. But the Moon in turned fell in love with the earth and grew fearful of the Sun’s might. And so the Moon decided to intervene in the fate of his companion. The Moon steadied the axis of rotation of the Earth, and in turn slowed the rate of the earth’s rotation. He created tides in the oceans which in turn created the seasons. He calmed the weather and created the continents. The Earth calmed itself and became more beautiful. But there was one gift left to bestow on this most favoured daughter, and this gift that had never been bestowed before….

II
The Moon watched in awe as life climbed it’s way out of the oceans onto the land. He looked at his own barren surface and gazed in wonder at multitude of plants and animals that now populated the surface of his beautiful companion.
Jealous of the sun, The Moon made the night it’s realm. And the humans became the favoured of the Moon. For at night the humans would look back at The Moon with same longing he had for them. The Moon became the human’s nocturnal beacon, and his influence could be felt deep within their body and mind. The moon permeated the dreams as well as the reproductive cycle of the humans. And in the dark of the night the humans looked to their moon, and in his safety they dreamt….
And with The Moon’s help the humans developed these dreams and began to create. And their creations became more and more fanciful, and this in turn gave them more and more time to play. And in the human’s play The Moon had the greatest joy.

III
In their play the humans created language and weapons and art science, they tamed the horse and dug precious metals from the earth. They cured illness and learnt how to unlock the great reserves of power the sun had stored deep within the surface of her favoured child.
But the humans now thought they had dominion over all that they saw, and strongest wanted dominion over the weak. They became aggressive and greedy. They looked up to moon but forgot what he had done for them, and why he had done it. They now coverted the moon.

IV
The Moon was sad, for he knew that the humans would devour everything before them, including themselves. And the moon would be lonely again.
But then the moon remembered the night time, and how he had the power over the human’s dreams. And then he had his greatest idea. He would make them visit him! And they could play together. The humans would realise that they were not placed upon the Earth to exercise their power, but to harness their power in the service of play. The children understood this but their parents did not. They needed to be reminded. And so in their dreams he sang his moon song, and in an octave that was not audible but heard in the realm of intuition.
V
The Moon harnessed their lust for power and competition and fooled them into using their greatest energy to leave their beloved planet and visit him. The human’s dedication to this task was great, and after the greatest of effort the time had come for the humans to visit their eternal guardian, and for the moon, after the greatest wait, to consummate his love with his most favoured…..
Coda
The Earth is not ours, and neither is the moon or sun. We are here at their whim. We will not destroy the favoured of the sun, She will destroy us. And when we are gone we will be remembered by the one…..our protector and custodian of our dreams….The Moon.
And as that memory fades and our companion is devoured by the sun, his last and most treasured memory will be perhaps the day we came to play………….
